Tour of the Museum’s permanent collection

This tour allows you to discover the history of the building and its evolution to the present day, from a vacation villa to the Fine Arts Museum of Nice. The current museum, heir to the first municipal Fine Arts museum, was inaugurated in 1928 in the sumptuous residence built for Princess Elisabeth Kotschoubey (1821-1897).

The diverse collections were built around a core of works sent by Napoleon III after Nice was annexed to France in 1860, along with generous donations from local personalities and winter visitors.

The largest room on the ground floor, dedicated to the important Van Loo dynasty, offers a look at French painting in the 18th century. The gallery, adorned with neoclassical and Orientalist paintings and sculptures, allows us to explore the evolution of artistic themes in art history as well as the historical and political context of the 19th century.

The upstairs rooms are devoted to religious art from the Middle Ages to the 18th century and to the artist Jules Chéret (1836-1932), a French painter and poster artist, whose works are extensively preserved in the museum.
