In the hustle and bustle of cosmopolitan avant-garde Paris in the early 20th century, the painter Raoul Dufy met the young fashion designer Paul Poiret. It was a decisive meeting that changed the course of the painter’s life.
At a time when his cubist paintings were plunging Dufy into doubt, the painter took up wood engraving for Apollinaire, somewhat by chance. Fallen under the spell of these engraved motifs, Poiret offered the painter the chance to work for him. The boundaries between major art and decorative arts were soon to blur… thanks to the colourful audacity of a young painter turned fashion designer.
Discover the story in this talk, illustrated with works by Dufy, archive footage of Poiret’s haute couture and excerpts from the memoirs of this couture genius.
