This year, the museum is celebrating the centenary of the exhibition dedicated to Maurice Denis (1870–1943) held in Nice in 1925. The reconstruction and study of this exhibition testify to the importance of the artist’s successive trips to the south of France (1906, 1913 and 1922) during his prolific creative decade in the 1920s. The encounter between Denis’s world and the French Riviera also provides an opportunity to take a broader look at this very special moment in his life as a man and an artist. After the death of his first wife in 1919, his marriage to Elisabeth Graterolle restored his creative vitality, enabling him to respond to the many requests that crowned his career.
The blues and pinks sparkling with winter light that flood his works from this period reflect the fulfilment of an artist who found new inspiration on the shores of the Mediterranean during the peaceful interwar period.
